The 16-year-old snowboarder who died on Grouse Mountain Saturday has been identified as an exchange student from Brazil.

Luca Marcondes Cesar was on the mountain with friends, including a teenager from the family he was living with when he got separated from the group.

Mounties said the young man eventually took a nine-metre fall and hit a tree off the main trail.

Heavy fog and sleet hampered search efforts, and when crews finally found Cesar shortly after midnight he was already in cardiac arrest. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Cesar was an inexperienced snowboarder and wasn’t wearing a helmet.

The B.C. Ministry of Health said it’s not consider making helmets mandatory for skiers and snowboarders in light of the tragedy, but commended ski operators who encourage helmet use.
