An 82-year-old woman is dead after driving into opposing traffic on Highway 1 and hitting a family car head-on Saturday morning.

Mounties say the elderly Hope resident exited the Bradner Road rest stop going eastbound in the westbound lanes, and crashed her Buick Allure into a Mazda 3 Hatchback at around 10:45 a.m.

She did not survive.

“This tragic loss of life has impacted a family forever,” Sgt. Peter Thiessen said in a statement. “This is a time of year when families come together and celebrate the holidays but unfortunately a family now grieves the loss of a beloved family member.”

The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The other vehicle was carrying a married couple from Chilliwack, ages 29 and 24, and their three-month-old baby boy.

The parents both sustained undisclosed, non-life threatening injuries in the crash, but their child was unharmed.

The Upper Fraser Valley Traffic Services is continuing to investigate the crash.
