It’s been a scene in countless movies and TV shows: A teen’s parents are out of town for the night, he throws a party, and it spirals out of control.

Police say that’s more or less what happened on a normally quiet cul-de-sac in Abbotsford on Friday night.

Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald told CTV News a 14-year-old boy’s parents had gone into Vancouver for the night, thinking he’d be fine at their home on the 34900-block of McCabe Place by himself.

The boy decided to have a party, and the night ended with one of his friends taken to hospital after an apparent assault, MacDonald said.

“It started as a small party, as you can imagine, and then pretty much got out of control,” he said.

Neighbour Randy Harris said the party was somewhat noisy, and got louder as the night went on. Police were called shortly after midnight, after some sort of altercation had taken place inside.

“Something happened inside and everybody kind of came running out into the cul-de-sac,” Harris said. “You could hear there was an aggressive argument and fighting going on.”

MacDonald said there were roughly 40 people at the party, most of them between the ages of 17 and 19. There were “tons of alcohol being consumed,” he said.

“We’re concerned because there certainly was, in our opinion, at least one person who was engaging in assaulting some of the younger people at the party,” MacDonald said.

Police arrested a 22-year-old man on Saturday in connection with the party. MacDonald said police hope to bring assault charges against him.

The investigation is ongoing, MacDonald said. Police hope to talk to some of the other attendees, most of whom left as soon as officers arrived.

“Many people fled, and some of those people who fled may be witnesses or they could be victims themselves, and that’s why we want them to come forward.”
