One person is in custody after an alleged hostage taking at a Vancouver 7-Eleven store Wednesday.

Police say the incident happened at around 11:30 a.m. at the store in the 1200-block of Granville Street.

According to police, a 37-year-old man walked into the store, threatened a female employee with a knife, doused her with lighter fluid and threatened to light her on fire.

The suspect then took the employee to the back room of the store and barricaded them both inside, police said.

Hostage negotiators and the emergency response team began a conversation with the suspect and a short time later he let the female employee go free. The suspect then surrendered to police.

It appears the victim and the suspect had a relationship, but it is unclear as to what extent.

The female employee was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
