A tense six-hour standoff ended early Saturday morning in Port Alberni where a 38-year-old man wielding a hatchet had barricaded himself and a 15-year-old girl inside a home.

At 7:45 p.m. Friday police responded to 9-1-1 calls of an intoxicated man acting aggressively on Tseshaht First Nations Reserve.

When police arrived they were confronted by an aggressive large dog that charged. One officer fired shots toward the dog, causing the animal to flee.

Police say the man refused to co-operate and barricaded himself in the house, where he had access to weapons.

Island District Emergency RCMP Emergency Response Team were called in after the man had become increasingly aggressive, damaging property inside the house with a hatchet and refusing to come out.

At 1:40 a.m. Saturday the emergency response team forced their way into the home and arrested the man without further incident.

The 15-year-old girl was unharmed and Child and Family Services is now involved.

The investigation is ongoing and the man remains in custody.

The dog has also been found and police are assessing its condition.
