The pilot of a small plane has been hospitalized after crash-landing on Highway 97 in the South Okanagan.

Authorities said the single engine aircraft clipped a large truck and burst into flames during a landing attempt a couple kilometres north of Osoyoos.

The pilot was the only person on board, and managed to get out of the plane before it was completely consumed by flames, according to the Transportation Safety Board.

It’s unclear whether anyone on the ground was injured during the crash, but the pilot was taken to Kelowna General Hospital with undisclosed injuries.

Witnesses said the fiery wreckage created a huge plume of smoke that could be seen from kilometres away.

The crash temporarily closed Highway 97 in both directions to facilitate emergency responders.
