North America’s largest appliance manufacturer confirms it is dealing with problems at three brand-new condo developments, following a CTV News investigation revealing widespread flooding and damage involving dozens of consumers.

Steele on Your Side has learned of more than 20 separate floods linked to the same model of top-loading Whirlpool washing machine (Y WET 3300XQO).

The floods have caused more the a million dollars in damage and insurance claims.  Many condo owners are forced out of their units as the costly renovations are completed.

The buildings involved in several flooding cases were all developed by Amacon Properties, including The District South Main condo complex in East Vancouver and The Beasley high-rise in Yaletown.

In June, Rancho Management Services, the company that manages the Beasley, posted a notice in the elevator warning residents that “several Whirlpool washing machines had recently overflowed.”

The notice said Whirlpool needed access to all suites to “inspect every washing machine for possible fault,” and reminded residents they would be on the hook for the water damage deductible of $5,000 if there was any flooding in their suite that damaged someone else’s unit.

After Steele on Your Side sent a copy of the memo to Whirlpool, it admitted there are problems at all three Amacon buildings.

In an email, spokesperson Kristine Vernier told us that: “Several months ago Whirlpool inspected all the washer units...to ensure they were installed correctly and functioning properly."

Whirlpool says it has now, "reached out to the developer of the housing unit and offered to re-inspect all washers,” but maintains “we stand behind out products, and will fulfill our responsibility to our customers."

The Mudrovcic family's life was turned upside down this spring after their Whirlpool washing machine overflowed, causing a flood in their brand-new Burnaby townhouse.

What angers the family the most is the fact the flood happened just days after their next-door neighbour suffered a $50,000 flood caused by the same washing machine – and a Whirlpool technician had given the Nudrovcic’s machine the all clear just hours before their suite was flooded.  It caused over $30,000 damage.

The couple called CTV News after seeing our story on Jamie Clerkson and Shannon McCrae’s $50,000 flooding nightmare -- caused by the exact same whirlpool washing machine.

Stephanie Mudrovcic is furious at Whirlpool and wants the company to admit there are widespread problems with the washing machine.

"This is so obviously a problem,” she said.  “Just own up.  Obviously something's not right.  Own up to it, do a recall -- get them out of people's homes."

Stephanie Mudrovcic said Whirlpool has been “a nightmare” to deal with.  She said her family was ignored by the company until its strata insurance company took possession of the faulty washing machine.  Then the couple got a call from Whirlpool offering to buy back the machine at retail value.  They received a cheque in the mail, but no apology or documentation.

Sources in appliance industry told Steele on Your Side this problem could be even bigger, because there are very few stackable washing machines made for condo buildings -- and this Whirlpool model is in thousands of suites in the Lower Mainland.
