A family and their pets were able escape without injury after their Langley home went up in flames early Friday morning.

The fire started somewhere on a main floor but quickly spread to the second floor and garage area.

The homeowner smelled smoke but by the time he grabbed his family members the flames were already spreading.

All five people inside were able to escape before the home was engulfed in flames.

“The main thing is that everyone is safe,” said homeowner Bill Mullan.

Neighbour Jordan Roberge ran outside to make sure everyone was okay and then called 911.

He described hearing what he thought were gunshots before seeing a propane tank explode.

“For a family’s house to burn down, it’s pretty terrible,” he said. “It seems heartbreaking.”

The home sustained heavy damage, as did a U-Haul parked in the driveway.

A fire investigator is on scene trying to determine what caused the blaze.
