Mounties are investigating a brazen theft in the Okanagan that was caught on surveillance video, but it’s not what was stolen that has people talking – it’s the suspect.

The video appears to show an elderly woman walking onto the patio of a Vernon home and stealing a $40 decorative table.

Homeowner Mike Malinosky said he had only recently convinced his wife that they should install the camera, and when he took a look at the footage, he was shocked.

“I rewound the video, just started to laugh and she says ‘What ?’ and I said ‘You have to come and take a look at this,’” Malinosky said.

He posted the video to a Facebook group called Vernon Rant and Rave in hopes someone would recognize the gray-haired thief.

The video has been racking up comments and views, and some have suggested the woman could have dementia.

But Malinosky said the video appears to show that the woman is lucid.

“Before she took the table she just kind of peered into the living room window before she actually snuck back off with it, so I think she knew what she was doing,” he said.

Police said they’re looking into the unusual theft, and believe social media may help generate leads.
