A Belgian Shepherd named Spirit will undergo surgery in a Surrey animal hospital after getting stabbed more than 12 times at a residential property Monday night.
Police say a man repeatedly stabbed the three-year-old dog after it approached him as he was trespassing on a property in the 12700-block of 58th Avenue around 7:30 p.m.
RCMP say the man jumped a fence to access the large gated property. A sweep of the area did not locate the suspect.
The animal suffered about a dozen wounds by what is believed to be a pocket knife. Many of the wounds are on the dog's face.
Ricky Bajwa, manager at Surrey Animal Hospital, told CTV News the dog is conscious and able to walk on his own.
“Lots of bleeding because he has more than 12 cut wounds around his face. Now the dog is stabilized,” she said.
The suspect is described as being in his mid-20s, white and about 5-8 with dark hair and a medium build.
Belgian Shepherds, originally bred as herding dogs, can weigh up to 75 pounds.
