The 45-year-old Vancouver cyclist who died after being found unconscious on the Vancouver seawall in False Creek Wednesday night was struck by a heavy object before crashing his bike.

Investigators say the man was discovered in grave condition after police and paramedics were called to the foot of Carrall Street, not far from Science World, around 8:30 p.m.

Const. Brian Montague said the man fell face first onto the pavement after being hit by an undisclosed object, thrown by someone going through a trash bin nearby.

“The initial investigation indicates the tragic death was the result of a strange set of circumstances. Witnesses have provided information about a man who was going through a garbage can on the sea wall and tossing items out of the bin,” Const. Montague said in a statement.

The man who was seen throwing items left the scene before police arrived.

The victim, suffering from severe head injuries, passed away in hospital around 4 a.m. Thursday. It’s unclear if he was wearing a helmet when he fell.

Police say they are looking to identify and speak with a First Nations man who was searching through the garbage. He is described as 30 to 40-years-old, 6’ tall, with a medium build and shoulder-length black hair, and was wearing a black puffy jacket and jeans.
