Investigators are trying to identify a man’s body that was retrieved from Victoria’s inner harbour on Thursday.

A passerby saw the body shortly before 11 a.m. and called police, who cordoned off a park on Wharf Street to investigate. Officers retrieved the body of a young man, but so far they don’t know who he is or how he died.

“We don't know how long the body was in the water,” said Victoria police Const. Mike Russell. “We’re in the process of trying to identify the body right now and locating next of kin and informing them of what’s happened.”

It’s not clear if the death is suspicious.
