Abbotsford police are investigating after a local gym was vandalized with swastikas, white pride slogans and other racist graffiti.

The spray-painted hate symbols, which include a large swastika covering a doorway and a reference to the Nazi SS police, turned up Monday morning at Twisters Gymnastics Club on Tretheway Street.

The facility's recreational program director, Sue Tyson, said the discovery was shocking and saddening for gym staff.

"This is supposed to be a place where everyone can come and feel accepted and welcomed, a place for our whole community to enjoy fitness," Tyson said.

Police say other buildings in the area were also targeted with graffiti, and they will be launching an "aggressive" investigation to determine who is responsible.

"Prejudice and hate is not something we want to tolerate, and those symbols can be very impactful to some individuals in our community and should be offensive to all of us," Const. Ian MacDonald said.

Hate-inspired vandalism is uncommon in the city, MacDonald added.
