Oodles of poodles and other dogs are looking for new homes after an elderly woman surrendered the animals to the Vancouver branch of the BC SPCA.

The owner of the small dogs – 10 poodles, three Chihuahuas and two Pomeranians – could no longer care for the animals and they were taken in by the Vancouver shelter.

The influx of cute pups is a mixed blessing for the SPCA. They may be lovable and cute, but the arrival of so many dogs at once carries a heavy financial burden.

“This many dogs all at once means we’ll need upwards of $10,000,” branch manager Charlotte Ellice said. “A lot of them are adoptable right now. Some will require very special homes as many have lived a sheltered and isolated life.”

Ellice said many of the small dogs need veterinary care including blood work, dental work, analysis and related treatment – which can cost between $400-$500 per dog.

Robbie, one of the poodles, needs surgery on his left-hind leg to correct a joint problem that will cost at least $2,000, she said.

Ellice and the SPCA are hoping to find loving homes for the wee creatures as soon as possible. You can take a look at the playful pups below.
