Vancouver may be shedding its image as "No Fun City."

City Council voted to put $53,000, in cash and staffing costs, toward fireworks and police reinforcement for Canada Day celebrations on July 1st.

The annual event was cancelled from 2003 to 2006 after Vancouver police complained crowd control was becoming increasingly difficult.

Last year, officials reinstated the event, but tried to curb attendance by issuing 5,000 special tickets for entrance to Canada Place. People without tickets were encouraged to go to other waterfront destinations, such as Coal Harbour or Stanley Park, to see the fireworks.

"I think Vancouver is a fun city," said Councillor Kim Capri on Tuesday. "As we ramp up to 2010 we are just going to continue to see more events ... and celebrate."

Councillor Peter Ladner said it's the job of police to keep order.

"The police have a responsibility to keep order, it would be much more orderly to stay home at night ... police will be happy to work with this, I'm sure," he said.

Officials cancelled the event in 2003 after a stabbing took place in the crowd the year before.

CTV British Columbia will broadcast live from Canada Place on July 1st.
