RCMP say a former gym teacher and basketball coach from northern B.C. faces a number of sex-related charges involving students in the 1980s.

A news release says 66-year-old John Triplett appeared in court in Prince George on Wednesday.

The news release says the charges relate to "inappropriate interactions" with two 13-year-old who attended DP Todd Secondary School in Prince George in the 1980s.

RCMP say Triplett had been a gym teacher and basketball coach at DP Todd from the late-1970s to the mid-1980s, and most recently taught in the Surrey area.

The news release says the police investigation began in September 2009, at which point Surrey School Board "took steps to ensure students' safety," although it doesn't elaborate.

The release says the RCMP can't confirm whether the alleged crimes were isolated incidents, or if there might be more victims.
