RCMP in Maple Ridge, B.C., are scheduled to announce a major development Friday morning in the investigation into a teenager's death last year.

Shannon Dale Raymond, a student at Westview Secondary School, was found dead at a home in Maple Ridge in July 2008.

An RCMP official told ctvbc.ca Thursday night that the death was handled by the serious crime division but has never been classified as a homicide.

He declined to discuss details of how the girl died.

Shannon's older sister, Danielle, 25, told ctvbc.ca late Thursday that she and her mother, Julie, planned to attend Friday's press conference.

"There's a lot of anticipation from my mom and I," she said.

Police called the family on Thursday.

Danielle Raymond described her younger sister as a "very bright star, energetic, personable, and kind."

Shannon was also very athletic and loved to play soccer, she said.

The family has been distributing purple bracelets with the phrase "Be true to yourself" on them to raise money for a school bursary in Shannon's name.
