Surrey RCMP are launching a campaign to generate new tips in a number of historic missing persons cases, beginning with Stephen Begg, who vanished in February 2011.

The department's Missing Persons Unit will be making monthly appeals to the public in order to get new information in a selection of unsolved cases, some involving people who had medical or substance abuse issues, were involved in child custody issues or were fleeing challenging situations. Others just disappeared.

According to Surrey RCMP Cpl. Barb Creighton, the campaign is supposed to "bring closure to these individuals' families and their loved ones."

Several of the cases date back decades while others, like Begg's, are more recent.

Begg was reported missing on Feb. 16, 2011, 10 days after he was last seen at his home in the 16800-block of Fraser Highway. He told his family he would be going away for a few weeks, but didn't provide further details.

Surrey RCMP has conducted an extensive search, involving the Air 1 helicopter and Search and Rescue teams, to no avail. His father made a public appeal for more information on Sept. 2, 2011, but investigators have since hit a dead end.

Begg is described as a Caucasian male, 36 years old, 5-8 tall and 130 lbs. He has blonde hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP Missing Persons Unit at 604-599-0502.
