Suspected gangster Gurbinder Singh Toor has been identified as the man gunned down on his way to play ball hockey at the Port Moody Recreation Centre Wednesday night.

Police say the 35-year-old had connections to the Dhak-Duhre crime group, whose members have been targeted in a number of bloody gang hits in Metro Vancouver over the past year.

Toor was shot at around 9:25 p.m. while standing in the parking lot of the facility at 300 Ioco Road. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after midnight.

Witnesses nearby reported hearing up to nine gunshots in rapid succession, which some initially mistook for fireworks. Police say a dark-coloured SUV was then seen fleeing the scene.

The Vancouver Police Department Homicide Squad, which has been called to handle the investigation, confirmed the shooting appears to be targeted and gang-related, but few other details have been released.

Last fall, police issued an unorthodox warning to members of the Duhre gang that they were being targeted by rival groups as gang tensions escalated.

Sandip Singh Duhre, a man reported to be the outfit's former leader, was later killed in a brazen shooting at a downtown Vancouver restaurant in January.

Anyone with information on the latest shooting is asked to call police at 604-717-2500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
