The search for a missing plane in the Fraser Valley Monday evening has ended in tragedy.

The ultralight aircraft was found crashed south of Highway 1 and Ross Road in Abbotsford at around 9 p.m. The pilot was killed.

Police said the plane departed for Maple Ridge in the afternoon but disappeared from radar shortly after takeoff.

A beacon was received from an area in the northwest region of Abbotsford, sparking a search aided by police officers, two rescue teams and a Canadian Forces helicopter.

Dark, rainy conditions and forested terrain hampered search efforts, but the plane’s wreckage and the body of the pilot were eventually found.

Early indications are that the deceased did not survive the crash.

The Abbotsford Police Department offered condolences to the man’s family and friends. His name is not being released.
