Coquitlam parents are fuming over a judge's decision to once again grant bail to Aleksandr Plehanov, a substitute teacher charged with sexually assaulting his students, after he was arrested a second time earlier this week.
Police arrested the 35-year-old on Tuesday after being told he had breached the terms of his previous release, Cpl. Bert Paquet said. He appeared in court Thursday on a new charge of criminal harassment, and was released on Friday after posting a $1,000 bail.
Plehanov was previously charged with four sex-related offences allegedly involving students at two Coquitlam elementary schools.
Parents at one of the schools connected to the case say they are outraged by Plehanov's second release. "Why is he not in jail?" Kurt Thomas said. "He's out again, doing what he's doing. It shouldn't be allowed."
The judge did impose stricter bail conditions, ordering Plehanov not to step foot in the Tri-Cities area. But Annabel Webb of the non-profit organization Justice for Girls says that's not good enough.
"It's outrageous to me he's being released after breaching his bail," she said. "The fact there was another charge added on and they still released him, I can't even understand how the courts could have done that."
Coquitlam Mounties say they have no plans to step up patrols at area schools, leaving some parents wondering who is on their side.
