The RCMP say alcohol and possibly drugs are factors in the deaths of two teenaged girls who were friends and died within hours of each other in Metro Vancouver.

A 16-year-old girl from Vancouver was found in medical distress in Burnaby about 4 a.m. Tuesday and later died.

Five hours later, a 17-year-old girl was found in similar condition at a home in Richmond and she also died.

Police say the girls were friends and witnesses saw them together earlier in the night.

The RCMP say they are in the early stages of their investigations but alcohol and perhaps drugs are believed to be contributing factors.

The exact causes of death won't be known until toxicology tests are completed in two weeks.
