A 59-year-old man was killed in a head-on collision near Vancouver's Van Dusen Botanical Gardens on Saturday afternoon.

The Surrey man died after the car he was driving crossed the centre line in the 4900-block of Oak Street and hit a southbound vehicle around 12:20 p.m.

A 51-year-old woman who was a passenger in the car survived with minor injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 53-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to survive.

Vancouver police say that speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.

The death marks Vancouver's fifth traffic fatality this year.
