Police have confirmed that a 42-year-old man is dead after his car plunged several hundred feet over a cliff near Lillooet, B.C. on Friday.

After receiving a report by a road worker of skid marks on a section of Highway 99 around midnight, an officer examined the area and discovered a single vehicle had gone over a steep bank and landed along the icy shore of the Fraser River, RCMP Sgt. Fran Bethell told ctvbc.ca.

Rescue crews began a search for possible victims of the crash, but the effort had to be postponed until daylight.

Bethell said that with the help of a helicopter, rescue crews were able to reach the victim. The deceased man, who had just moved to Lillooet from Kamloops, was the only person inside the car, a Mazda3.

Police say the area has very steep and rocky slopes and that it is too soon to comment on what caused the accident.

The BC Coroners Service is now investigating the man's death.
