The son of Carol Berner, the drunk driver responsible for the death of a four-year-old girl, has been sentenced to life in jail for killing a young father.

Joshua Berner was found guilty in October for the stabbing death of Benjamin Warland, 23.

Berner, then 24, was charged after Warland was found suffering fatal stab wounds on the lawn of a home in Richmond on Feb. 1, 2009.

Police say Berner stabbed Warland, the father of a young boy, multiple times after an altercation on a city bus spilled out onto the street. The accused maintained he acted in self-defense.

Berner received a life sentence in B.C. Supreme Court Friday morning.

He will not be eligible for parole for 10 years.

Berner is the son of Carol Berner, who sentenced to 30 months behind bars for impaired and dangerous driving in the 2008 death of Alexa Middelaer.

Last week, a judge granted her bail as she appeals her conviction.
