Coquitlam Mounties have recovered a Jeep Grand Cherokee involved in an early morning crash that claimed the lives of two women early Saturday morning.
Staff Sgt. Mark McCutcheon says a car crashed into a concrete barrier near Pitt River Road and Lougheed Highway at around 12:20 a.m. A Good Samaritan saw the accident and approached the car to offer help.
"That's when the Jeep struck her and the female driver, killing them instantly," McCutcheon said. "The driver failed to stop, failed to give any assistance and took off."
A male occupant was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital with non-life threatening injuries to his leg and head.
McCutcheon says the Good Samaritan was a mother of four. Her husband witnessed the accident but was not injured.
The names of the victims have not been released.
The Jeep, which has not been reported stolen, was recovered a short distance from the crash site. The driver was gone.
McCutcheon said the vehicle has been brought in for forensic examination, and police "have an idea" about who was driving. He urged the individual to come forward and speak to police.
Anyone with information about the crash can contact Coquitlam RCMP.
