Mounties have arrested a suspect who allegedly stole an elderly woman’s car and ran over a Good Samaritan who was trying to stop him.

Witnesses told CTV News they saw a thief snatch the senior’s keys out of her hand then push her to the ground in the parking lot of a PriceSmart Foods around 1:30 p.m.

One man rushed to help her, but was struck as the thief tried to escape.

“The car went right over his legs,” witness Amy Dumas said. “Nothing stopped this car. The car went flying down, there was groceries flying out of the back.”

An off-duty police officer also saw the suspect fleeing the scene and reported where he was headed. Mounties managed to track the vehicle down about 12 blocks away and apprehended a suspect.

The man’s name hasn’t been released but the RCMP said he’s in his 50s. It’s unclear what charges he may be facing.

The owner of the car, who suffered only minor injuries, and the Good Samaritan were both taken to hospital. The extent of the Good Samaritan’s injuries hasn’t been released but Mounties confirmed they aren’t life-threatening.

Officers are still investigating the incident, and ask anyone with information to contact the Surrey RCMP detachment at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
