The Sea-to-Sky Highway was closed in both directions near Whistler for more than six hours Thursday after a fatal head-on crash.
Two vehicles collided on Highway 99 north of Callaghan Road shortly before 9 a.m., causing one of the cars to burst into flames.
The driver was trapped inside the burning vehicle and did not survive, according to Whistler RCMP.
Pictures from the scene showed a badly smashed SUV at the side of the road and another vehicle engulfed in flames in the centre of the highway.
The driver of the other car was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The road closure prompted traffic delays in both directions, and the road was re-opened around 3:30 p.m. Traffic collision analysts from the Lower Mainland were dispatched to the area to investigate the crash.
It’s unclear if weather and road conditions contributed to the crash.
