More than 40,000 people sardined themselves into the Granville Street entertainment district to celebrate the Canucks' momentous Game 1 win in the Stanley Cup Final – without any major incidents, according to police.
Other than 325 liquor pour-outs, the Vancouver Police Department says there were no notable incidents over the course of the historic evening.
The Canuck fan-filled crowd necessitated 31 violation tickets, three drug seizures, five breach of peace arrests and three arrests for public drunkenness. Officers also dealt with a few minor fights.
The arrests included a partier who set off fireworks inside the crowd.
Meanwhile, the City of Vancouver is handling the heaps of garbage left behind by jubilant fans.
City spokeswoman Wendy Stewart says the usual night clean-up crew dealt with the refuse left on Granville Street as well as elsewhere downtown.
"The cleanup was more like a Saturday night than a Wednesday night," she told ctvbc.ca.
While the blue and green-clad revellers certainly haven't dumped Olympic-sized piles of garbage downtown yet, Stewart expects the amounts of refuse to grow.
"There's a lot of bins out and folks are good about cleaning up," she said. "As the crowd size grows the amount of refuse grows as well."
She says she thinks the weather has discouraged some partiers from venturing outside, which has helped keep the crowds under control.
However, better weather is in the forecast for Game 2 on Saturday, and both the VPD and the city are stepping it up.
The VPD will be heightening beach patrols earlier in the day as well as foot patrols in the downtown entertainment district through the evening.
Stewart says the city is debriefing after each playoff game and determining what level of attention the trash situation needs to be given. She says they will add additional resources if necessary as the team moves through the finals.
