Thousands of jubilant Canucks fans poured into downtown Vancouver to celebrate the team's squeaker win Wednesday night, but police say there was little troublemaking to report.

Boosters flooded into the intersection of Robson and Granville streets after Raffi Torres scored the game's only goal with just 19 seconds left in Game 1, putting Vancouver up one game to nothing against the Boston Bruins.

"It's pretty safe to say we've got tens of thousands of people in and around Granville Street in a party mood," Vancouver Police Const. Lindsey Houghton told CTV News.

"Given the size of the crowd and how many people are out here, everyone's having a really good time."

Police closed off the street to protect pedestrians and bulked up patrols in an effort to keep the party under control.

Houghton said officers ordered a "handful" of people to pour out open liquor containers and dealt with a small number of fights, but added that police handled nothing more serious than they would see on a normal summer night.

The most serious incident of the evening involved a reveller setting off fireworks inside a crowd of partiers.

"Fortunately, no one was hurt. We were in there quite swiftly to deal with the person," Houghton said. The man was arrested at the scene.

Police plan to keep up with their Olympics-style security plan of high-fives and smiles for Saturday's Game 2.

"The weather's going to be nicer; more people are going to be out looking to celebrate everything that the Vancouver Canucks have to offer," Houghton said.

In Surrey, the celebration centred on the intersection of Scott Road and 72 Avenue. Mounties there say they arrested one young person for causing a disturbance.

"People are a little bit more excited that we've seen in previous games," RCMP Cpl. Drew Grainger said.
