Police are asking the public for help after a "suspicious" house fire in Prince George, B.C., sent an 85-year-old man to hospital with serious injuries.

Fire officials and police arrived at the burning home on Merritt Road after receiving a call around 3 a.m. on Friday, RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass said in a press release.

Inside they discovered the elderly man suffering from injuries and he was transported to the University Hospital of Northern BC.

"This fire is believed to be suspicious in nature. A 49-year-old man associated to the residence is in custody," Douglass said.

The Prince George RCMP's Serious Crime Unit is investigating the fire.
