Burnaby RCMP are investigating after a 4-year-old toy poodle named Coco was stolen from the Lougheed Mall parking lot Saturday afternoon.

Police said the dog’s owner was putting groceries in her vehicle shortly before 6 p.m. when Coco, who was in her carrier, was snatched from the shopping cart.

The suspect -- an unknown man driving a silver four-door Honda Civic -- grabbed the carrier with the dog inside, then sped off toward Lougheed SkyTrain Station. There was also an unknown woman in the passenger seat of the vehicle, police said.

The driver is described as Caucasian, in his 20s, with blonde hair.

Police said they have surveillance footage of the incident and are asking members of the public to assist in identifying the suspects and returning the dog to its owner.

Coco’s owner told CTV News her dog is microchipped, and very friendly to humans. She said Coco can be identified by her cream-coloured hair and her underbite, as well as her limp. The dog will need surgery to address the limp, she said.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to call Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922.
