VICTORIA - The Mounties are taking the unusual step of releasing details of a court case after a Victoria-based soldier received the minimum sentence for possessing child pornography.

Const. Rosiane Racine of the RCMP's Integrated Child Exploitation Unit says that in August 2006, undercover police officers caught Darin James Nieuwendorp online in an undisclosed chat room.

Racine says that six months earlier, police found child porn images on Nieuwendorp's home computer and that he'd also stored the material in various forms.

She says 25-year-old Nieuwendorp was sentenced late last month to the mandatory minimum sentence of 45 days in jail, which he's serving on weekends in combination with a one-year probation.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service and the Victoria Police Department were involved in the investigation.
