Health Minister George Abbott says the thief who took priceless rings from a 90-year-old woman in a Vancouver hospital is a "jerk and low-life''.

And Abbott says the theft may lead to tighter security at B.C. hospitals.

The thief walked into Agnes Ulmer's room in Vancouver General Hospital on Saturday and said her rings needed cleaning, and she allowed him to take them.

A surveillance video shows a man in dark clothing leaving the hospital, but he's wearing a baseball cap that obscures his face.

A health agency spokeswoman says the man seemed to know his way around the building and appears to be a professional.

Abbott says he's distressed by the incident and says he may asked health agencies to review their security plans for hospitals.

He says it may lead to more restricted access for people entering health facilities.
