The family of 17-year-old Desmond Bassi is pleading for answers after the teen was killed early Saturday morning after a hit-and-run in Abbotsford, B.C. on Blueridge Drive, west of Townline Road.

According to Abbotsford police, after leaving a birthday party with a small group of friends, the boy walked ahead of the group toward Mt. Lehman Road. Police said the boy's friends found him lying on the road after being struck. Occupants in two other vehicles stopped at the scene after seeing the injured boy and called 911.

After arriving at the scene at around 1:35 a.m. police found the severely injured teenager in the roadway and immediately began performing CPR compressions on him.

Despite attempts to save the teen, he succumbed to his injuries in hospital approximately an hour later.

"The driver, instead of remaining on the scene, and instead of rendering any medical assistance, basically just took off," said Const. Ian MacDonald.

Rob Bassi, Desmond's father, describes him as an all-star athlete and loving son.

"This hasn't really even sunk in yet," Bassi said. "I just wish this was just a bad dream, but this is going to be hard to move on."

Bassi said his son had just graduated high school and was looking forward to attending Simon Fraser University in the fall on a football scholarship.

"He was loving and caring," Bassi said. "Just the type of boy every parent would want."

Desmond's uncle, Bob Gill, said that his nephew always made time for his friends and family, despite being busy with school and sports.

"He had a smile that we'll never forget," Gill said. "I'm just going to miss him forever and we're just not going to be able to replace that in our family's hearts."

Police are still investigating the incident and processing evidence the vehicle left behind at the scene.

"We will identify the make, model, and year of the vehicle," MacDonald said. "It's only a matter of time before we identify you, so I'm suggesting that that driver do the right thing."

The Bassi family said that the tragedy is even worse because Desmond was killed only blocks away from his home. They are hopeful that the "cowardly" driver of the car will be caught.

"It won't bring him back, but it will put some closure to know exactly what happened," Bassi said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Abbotsford Department 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
