One person is in serious condition and 26 others injured after a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 5 Wednesday evening.

Police said two semi trailers, a tour bus and two passenger cars were involved in the collision just south of Kamloops at around 6 p.m.

"It looked like a bunch of cars got munched in between a couple of semi-trailers and then a bus came along and it hit the slippery area ,” said Const. Jason Epp, adding that the truck driver suffered serious injuries to his head and was taken immediately to hospital.

Several passengers were trapped inside the bus for up to two hours as officials worked to get them out through the bus’s broken-out front windshield

“It was really terrible,” said witness Shaun Giesbrecht. “[The bus] was sideways.”

A few people were outfitted with neck braces, but none appeared to be severely hurt.

Other vehicles involved in the crash wound up against the guard rail, but there do not appear to be any serious injuries as a result.

Treacherous driving conditions, including slick, slushy pavement likely contributed to the crash.

The highway reopened Thursday at around 5 a.m.
