A suspected shoplifter struck by a speeding car on the Trans-Canada Highway in Coquitlam, B.C., is not expected to survive.

Police say two women accused of shoplifting from the Real Canadian Superstore Thursday night were running away from a security guard when at least one of them was hit by a car on Highway 1.

Officers say the other woman continued running and managed to cross the highway safely.

The injured suspect was rushed to hospital with critical head injuries, where she remains in grave condition.

The woman has not been identified, as she was not carrying identification.

The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene to help and is cooperating with police.

“We know this incident is traumatic for the driver and witnesses. We are very grateful to everyone who remained on scene to assist the police with this tragic event,” said Cpl. Rhonda Rempel.
