A Victoria woman uncovered an unwelcome surprise when she went to eat a banana on Sunday: a living scorpion.

Christy Smith had bought the organic bananas from a Thrifty Foods outlet in the Victoria neighbourhood of Fairfield.

After unwrapping her purchases at home, she took the Del Monte brand sticker off and noticed some insect-like legs.

"I peeled off the sticker and just saw moving legs and of course freaked out, and karate chopped it or something," she said. “It was a scorpion.”

Finding a spider or bug in fruit purchases, while sometimes disgusting, isn't uncommon.

A spokesperson for Thrifty Foods said tropical fruit is always washed upon arrival but some critters or insects manage to stowaway.

In a tweet, Thrifty Foods says they have provided a refund and are following up with Smith.
