Mounties are asking the public for help solving a bizarre attack that left three innocent people bound and badly beaten in a secluded part of Richmond last month.

The RCMP said two men and a woman were sitting around a campfire celebrating an anniversary along a quiet stretch of River Road on Feb. 28 when they were attacked by four strangers.

Investigators believe the assailants had mistaken the trio for other people. They beat the victims and fled in a dark-coloured car, leaving all three bound at the scene.

“This is a very disturbing and vicious assault,” Cpl. Chris Tarasoff said in a statement. “One victim suffered significant injuries and all will have to live with the memory of this brutal assault.”

The most seriously wounded victim had extensive cuts to his face and head, according to the RCMP. The trio, who are all Lower Mainland residents, were treated at hospital and released.

Nearly a month after the attack, Mounties have yet to track down any suspects, and are asking the public for help solving what they describe as an isolated and unfortunate case of mistaken identity.

The RCMP said one suspect is a white man, 20-30 years old, and the other three are men of various ethnicities, possibly in their mid-20s or mid-30s. No other descriptive details have been released.

Anyone who was in the area of River Road between No. 7 and No. 8 roads between 7-11 p.m. the night of the attack is asked to contact the Richmond RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
