A man and his dog were lucky to escape a suspicious house fire in Coquitlam early Friday morning.

Authorities say the man called 911 when he discovered flames at the front and back of his home on Robinson Street around 2:30 a.m.

"He called it in when he was inside the structure," said Asst. Fire Chief Stu Aspinall.  "He told our dispatcher that he couldn't get out conventionally, so the dispatcher advised him to go out a window."

The man then grabbed his dog and climbed out a window, escaping the flames uninjured.

The fire eventually moved to the attic, seriously damaging the home.

While the cause of the fire is not yet known, officials believe it may have been deliberately set.

Mounties have been called in to assist with the investigation.
