Homicide investigators have been called in to investigate a suspicious death near a Safeway in Surrey on Friday.

Emergency crews were called to the Safeway at 88 Avenue and 152 Street on Friday, shortly after 10 p.m., for reports that a man was unresponsive.

Crews were unable to revive the man, and he died at the scene, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said in a statement Sunday.

The man was later identified as 27-year-old Greg Lupel, who had no fixed address but was known to frequent the Surrey area.

"Mr. Lupel's death is suspicious, and IHIT will continue investigating to ensure nothing is overlooked," Cpl. Meghan Foster said.

"An autopsy and further testing is required to determine Mr. Lupel's cause of death, and to determine if foul play was a factor."

Anyone who knew or spoke to Lupel is asked to contact investigators, as is anyone with more information on his death.
