Vancouver police are thanking a film crew for tackling a stabbing suspect and detaining him until officers could arrive Thursday evening.

Police said a fight broke out between two men behind the Ivanhoe Pub on Main Street and ended with a stabbing.

That led to a real-life movie moment for members of a nearby film shoot.

Crew member Sean Boylan said heard shouting and saw a suspect bolting from the bar, and instinctively stepped in to stop him.

“I saw him throw a knife away and he came running directly at me, so I leveled him with a rugby hit,” Boylan said.

Three other crew members then jumped in to hold the suspect down until police got there.

Const. Brian Montague said police don’t recommend people try to takedown suspects on their own, but they’re grateful to Boylan and his coworkers.

“This individual obviously went above and beyond,” Montague said. “We’re always grateful when citizens step up and help our officers.”

It’s unclear what caused the initial fight outside the Ivanhoe. Police said it doesn’t appear the two men involved knew each other.

The victim, a 33-year-old man, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Montague said the suspect is a 25-year-old who is known to police, and he’s facing weapon and assault-related charges.
