Unconfirmed reports say eight people are trapped following an avalanche in the Flathead Valley near Fernie, B.C.

A spokesperson with B.C. Ambulance Service says two people were been brought out of the area by helicopter and met by ambulance for transfer to hospital.

The RCMP refused to confirm the details but said more information would be public shortly.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre says there have been reports of avalanches in the area all day.

James Floyer, with the centre, says significant new snowfall and a warming period and that combination overloaded the snowpack.

The search has been called off for the night and will resume in the morning.

CTV has a news team at the scene.

And an 18-year-old snowboarder has been reported missing on Mount Seymour, near Vancouver.
