A group of young people are lucky to be alive after the pickup truck they were riding in the back of hit a curb and flipped over early Saturday morning, according to Surrey RCMP.

The truck, which had an 'N' plate on it, was driving in the sand pits near 34 Avenue and 192 Street just after midnight, Surrey RCMP said. When it returned to the road it lost control, hit a curb and rolled over, according to police.

Ten people between the ages of 17 and 21 were in the pickup truck at the time, but only the driver and passenger in the cab were wearing seatbelts, police said. Those two were treated for injuries at the scene of the accident.

“This could’ve been something that we could be sitting here today talking about a group of deceased kids,” said Sgt. Dale Carr. “This is a very dangerous act. You don’t drive with people in the back of your vehicle.”

The other eight people in the back of the truck were all ejected as the vehicle flipped over. They had to be rushed to local area hospitals with various non-life threatening injuries, Carr said. All have since been released from hospital.

The pickup truck involved is a “write-off,” according to Carr.

The victims had to be rushed to multiple hospitals after the incident.

Police said the vehicle belonged to a friend of the driver's mother, and that the driver will face charges.
