Mounties are searching for a hit-and-run driver involved in a crash that killed a 16-year-old motorcyclist in Surrey Tuesday night.

Witnesses said a silver Honda Accord turned left in front of the teenager’s motorcycle at the intersection of 96th Avenue and 123A Street and the two vehicles collided.

"The bang, it was like a bomb going off and my husband said 'that can't be good,'" said Lorraine Tomic.

Tomic and her husband found the young man on the ground. He was pronounced dead in hospital not long after the crash.

Police have not released the young man's identity, but he has been identified on social media as Kevin Dhillon.

A memorial will be held at 9 p.m. in Holland Park to remember Dhillion.

According to RCMP, the Accord driver drove another block before abandoning the car and fleeing on foot.

“Once again, by leaving the scene of an accident, a driver has elevated a motor vehicle act investigation to a criminal matter,” Cpl. Bert Paquet said in a statement.

“Obviously, the vehicle and documents left behind provides our officers will physical evidence that will be crucial.”

Officers searched the area using police dogs, but were unable to track down a suspect. They are working to get a description and to contact the registered owner of the car.

Anyone with information on the crash who hasn’t spoken to police is asked to call the Surrey RCMP detachment at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
