Every year Consumer Reports names its Top Pick vehicles – standout cars that out-do all the others in its class. This year, one car maker is a real standout.

Toyota earned five of the 10 coveted spots in the publication's annual ratings.

"To be a Top Pick, the vehicle also has to be reliable because you don't want to spend time taking your vehicle to the shop, and all the money that might cost," said Consumer Reports' David Champion.

Among the top choices is the Toyota Camry Hybrid, which outdid all other family sedans in its class.

"The redesigned Camry Hybrid is much more engaging to drive, gets an impressive 38 miles per gallon, and has a nice plush interior," said Champion.

The Camry has been the best-selling car in the U.S. for 13 of the past 14 years.

The Toyota Highlander won in the family SUV category. The Toyota Prius won for Top Pick in the green category.

Despite recent issues with reliability and recalls, Consumer Reports says its data shows Toyota has greatly improved reliability.

Ford and Chevy each got a top spot. The Chevrolet Avalanche is the 2012 Top Pick for pickup trucks.

And the Ford Mustang muscled its way to the Top Pick sporty car. Unlike others in its class, it's comfortable and gets pretty good fuel economy.

The Infiniti G won for sports sedan, earning marks for fast acceleration and a luxurious interior. The Hyundai Sonota won for affordable family sedan.

The two other Toyotas named are the Toyota Rav4 for small SUV and the Toyota Sienna for family hauler.

Consumer Reports says Toyota's ability to maintain its competitive lead among hybrids and SUVs is a big factor in its strong presence on this year's list.

Top Picks must meet the publication's criteria in three areas: Road test, reliability and safety.
