The B.C. baby who continued to grow inside his 32-year-old mother’s womb after she was declared brain-dead last year has been delivered in good health.
Iver Cohen Benson was born Saturday evening, according to a Facebook post from his father Dylan Benson on Monday.
“Iver is healthy and is the cutest and most precious person I have ever met,” Benson wrote. “As to be expected, it will still be a bumpy ride for [us] as he continues to grow under the care of the wonderful staff at the hospital.”
Sadly, soon after welcoming his son into the world, Benson was forced to say goodbye to his wife. Robyn Benson died after being taken off life support on Sunday.
“I miss Robyn more than words can explain. I could not be more impressed with her strength, and I am so lucky to have known her. She will live on forever within Iver, and in my heart," Benson said in a heartbreaking tribute.
Iver, just two-pounds, 13-ounces, has red hair, like his mom.
The family’s sad story began just after Christmas, when Robyn complained of a headache.
She was rushed to hospital, but it was too late – doctors confirmed the expecting mother had suffered a cerebral brain hemorrhage that left her brain-dead.
In early February, physicians said they hoped to keep Robyn alive for another 6.5 weeks before performing a caesarean section. It’s yet unknown what caused them to deliver the baby early over the weekend.
An online fundraiser Dylan Benson set up to help raise his son has already surpassed $150,000, from an initial goal of $36,000.
