Police are searching for a pedestrian who was struck by a car in downtown Vancouver Friday morning only to get up and run away.

Witnesses said the man walked out of a Starbucks around 8 a.m. and was trying to cross six lanes of traffic on Georgia Street when he was hit.

“He went headfirst through the windshield of the car,” said John Chernesky, a motorist who was just feet away from the accident. “I didn’t think he was going to get up.”

The car came to a stop and the man slid onto the road. A group of people ran over to help, but the pedestrian stood and left the scene – despite what appeared to be a bleeding head injury.

“The fact that he got up and ran off is just boggling my mind. I imagine he’s probably feeling pretty rough right now,” Chernesky said.

The impact of the crash was powerful enough to destroy the car’s windshield.

According to the driver, who asked not to be identified, the man said he had to get to work then tried unsuccessfully to catch a bus.

The aftermath was caught on security camera footage obtained by CTV News. Police are asking anyone who might recognize the pedestrian to urge him to a hospital.

“He hasn’t phoned the ambulance or the police to get checked out,” Const. Brian Montague said. “We’ve checked with some of the local hospitals, haven’t been able to find him.”
