The Vancouver Police Department is investigating an incident in Surrey that has left a man in serious condition in hospital.

Surrey RCMP responded to the Claytonwood Grove area around 9:30 p.m. Sunday night after receiving a complaint of a man in a parked vehicle repeatedly honking the car's horn.

Officers located the vehicle but it sped off. Constable Peter Neily of the Surrey RCMP said police didn't follow.

The vehicle was found a block-and-a-half away. The 30-year-old driver, a Surrey resident, was taken into custody.

Police then noticed the man was in medical distress. He was given first aid on scene and then rushed to hospital. He is currently in serious condition.

The Surrey RCMP has asked investigators of the Vancouver Police Major Crime section to investigate the incident.

"Investigators or trying to determine whether he was in serious condition before or after he was honking his horn," said Constable Lindsey Houghton of the Vancouver Police Department.

"They will be going through all of the notes, all of the reports, and speaking with the officers and following up."

The man's name and the specifics of his injuries have not been released.

The B.C. Police Act stipulates that outside police agencies are to conduct the investigation of all serious incidents involving people who are suffering, or potentially suffering from serious injuries, while in police custody, Houghton said this morning in a press conference.
