Is it simply a distraction or a case of dangerous driving?

Coast Mountain Bus Company says it will investigate one of its drivers after he was recorded doing a Sudoku puzzle while driving.

Gordon McDonald took a cell phone video of the incident while he was riding the 395 Willowbrook/King George Station bus around 5 p.m. Monday night on Fraser Highway in Surrey.

Campbell, who takes the route once a week, said he was concerned because he saw the same driver reading in a torrential rain storm last week.

"It was the second time I've seen this, a driver reading or doing puzzles on his route," he told ctvbc.ca.

"I can understand if you're driving and eating something, but we're talking about someone doing a complex numerical puzzle and trying to drive."

The concerned passenger posted the video to the website YouTube, and also to TransLink's comments page on its website.

Derek Zabel of the Coast Mountain Bus Company would not say what disciplinary action, if any, would be taken against the driver.  He says safety is the company's top priority.

Campbell said despite his disappointment in the driver, he has faith in the transit system.

"This isn't a reflection of most of the drivers. Most are good and courteous and professional. But this is bad."
